The roadside memorial is a commemorative gesture widely recognised by society. Created and lovingly maintained by grieving family and friends, it is tolerated by government bureaucracies, and carefully respected by roadside workers. Roadside memorials transform an arbitrary spot on the side of the road into a site of sacred meaning, invested with the desire to continue the bond with the departed after death. Through this work, Grammatica explores this ritual by capturing roadside memorials with the power of the image thus memorialising the memorial in perpetuity. (2022)
